Which page do you need?

These three conditions overlap, and patients are often unsure which one applies to them. A short guide:

• If you have been told you have scarring, shadowing or fibrosis on a CT scan and nobody has named a specific cause yet, start with interstitial lung disease. That page covers how the cause is established.

Getting a specialist opinion

Which symptoms should send you to a lung specialist?

Most people arrive at a pulmonology clinic later than they should, because the early signs of serious lung disease look like ordinary tiredness or being out of condition. These are the patterns that genuinely warrant a specialist opinion rather than another course of treatment from a general clinic.

• Breathlessness that has crept up over months. First on stairs and slopes, then on the flat. Especially if it has been attributed to weight, age or fitness without anyone measuring your breathing.
• A dry cough lasting more than eight weeks. Chronic cough is rarely an infection, and repeated antibiotics are the commonest wrong turn.
• Asthma that inhalers are not controlling. Asthma that does not respond to asthma treatment is frequently not asthma.
• Oxygen that falls when you walk even though it reads normally at rest. This is the single most commonly missed finding in lung medicine.
• An abnormal chest X-ray or CT found on a health check, insurance screening or a scan done for something else.
• Breathlessness that persists after tuberculosis treatment, which is common across Karnataka and is treatable rather than inevitable.
• Coughing blood, at any volume, which always needs investigating.
• Blackouts or ankle swelling with breathlessness, which point toward the right side of the heart and pulmonary hypertension.

What happens at a specialist lung consultation in Bangalore?

The first visit is built around the imaging and test results you already have, which is why bringing them matters more than anything else. Expect a detailed history covering your home, work and hobby exposures, an examination, spirometry with a diffusion measurement, and a walk test with continuous oximetry where breathlessness is the main complaint.

What you should leave with is a clear statement of three things: what is known, what is not yet known, and what the next step is. If a diagnosis cannot be made on the first visit, you should be told exactly which test would settle it rather than being asked to come back and see.

Bring the scan images themselves rather than only the typed report, every previous pulmonary function test so the trend across time can be seen, recent blood work, and all current medicines in their boxes.
